« I think it was in 2009 when i received email from Lionel... Wow, it’s long enough to scheme a coup. Maybe two... Since then we discussed a lot about release his work on Sub Jam label and invite him to China... I wrote this long story into the book The Only Authentic Work which has been published with Lionel’s CD 23 Formes en Élastique as one work in 2013.

Then he came to China for a release tour. The day he arrived in Beijing was one of the heavy pollution days. On taxi to my home from airport was like lost in a cyberpunk film. He told me later: Mamma mia! I thought it was apocalyptic! But surely we survived from it and got a lot of bonus. Hot pot, Forbiden City, ink paitings, alcohol, black tea, music and friends, frozen worm and more hot pots. Then the trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou. And more alcohol and friends. And sounds, which are entirely, constantly embracing us and jumping into our recorders.


We traveled with Soviet Pop, an electronic music duo based in Beijing. 6 events in 3 cities including Beijing. In two weeks i discovered these cities as a traveller as well. Beijing was dusty, huge and droning. Hangzhou looked rich and tasty. Shanghai was fresh. We call it the capital of magic. I can recall so many pieces of moments of sounds, lights, colours, smells and faces... Yes that’s tour as it always been.

Lionel has wrote a lot of poems after this trip. I wrote few. Also we made photos and field recordings. Yes. That made a balance to what we eat (lamb and noodles) and breath (air with smog) from the world. Or maybe not. I’m not really sure what we did to the world. We just spent some time together with helps from people and electricity. The foods were fantastic anyway.

Before the last day Lionel stayed in China we recorded this album at an artist friend (Lili Chin)’s residency studio in Shanghai. Both we had speaker cones as instruments so we recorded our sounds from them. Plus recordings from our mixers. That was November 11th, 2013, in one of the most expensive hotels of the world. »

griffonnée sur un journal froissé
et glissée dans la poche du jean -

Tankers, super-tankers et containers
(observés depuis les toits de l'hôtel Swatch Art
Peace) glissent savamment
sur la rivière huileuse de Huangpu
depuis le gigantesque port en eau profonde de
Yangshan
construit pleine mer de Chine orientale
pour un trafic, dit-on, de plus de 600 millions de
tonnes à l'année

De temps à autre
une corne de brume résonne entre les buildings
semblant nous prévenir d'un danger imminent
puis, enfin, elle se mélange aux rumeurs métalliques
et incessantes de la gigantesque ville tentaculaire

Les engins, démesurés
(il y en aura des dizaines
chargés de denrées et marchandises de toutes sortes)
s'enfilent jusqu'à l'intérieur de la cité
en suivant les méandres compliqués du fleuve

Nous enregistrons et filmons
Yan Jun, Lili Chin et moi-même
fenêtres de l'atelier grandes ouvertes
espérant faire le poids face à cette industrie
omniprésente
œuvrant - chacun sa manière, chacun sa façon -
avec les quelques détritus électriques
et électroniques
glanés
ce matin
parmi les ruelles de l'invraisemblable quartier de
Xujiahui...

... plus tard, lecture attentive, dans un taxi
(en revenant, guidés par Yan Jun, de ce fameux
restaurant de serpents de la famille Baï)
de l'anthologie de poésie chinoise
emportée pour le voyage
Ivre de Tao, Li Po, voyageur, poète et philosophe en
Chine, au 8ème siècle

Où je trouve ce poème à méditer
sincère et profond
qui me donne chaud au cœur et signe
d'un unique trait
et passés les effets subtils de l'alcool de vipère
ma rencontre avec la terre du Milieu

SHANGHAI ATELIER

« A first sentence
scribbled on a crumpled paper
and slipped into the jeans pocket -

- first, a sentence

Tankers, super-tankers and containers
(seen from the roof of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel)
adroitly slide
on the oily Huangpu River
from the giant deep-water port of Yangchuan
built right in the middle of the East China Sea
for a traffic, they say, of more than 600 million
tons per year

Occasionally
a foghorn sounds between buildings
pretending to warn us of an impending danger
and then, finally, mixing with metallic, incessant
rumors of the huge sprawling city

The disproportionate vehicles
(there will be dozens
all loaded down with food and goods of all kinds)
thread their way to the city
through the meandering river

We record and film
Yan Jun, Lili Chin and myself
wide open windows in the workshop
hoping to match up to this omnipresent industry
working
- everyone his own way, everyone her own manner -
with some electric
and electronic trash
gleaned
this morning
among the narrow streets of the incredible
Xujiahui ...

... later, attentively reading, in a taxi
(coming back, led by Yan Jun, from this famous Baï
family snakes restaurant)
from an anthology of Chinese poetry
carried for the trip

Drunk on Tao, Li Po, traveler, poet and philosopher
in China in the 8th century

I found a sincere and deep poem
to meditate
that gives warm to the heart and signs
with a unique trace
and passes the subtle effects of Viper alcohol
my meeting with Middle-earth

" Two men drinking together, mountain flowers blossom
One cup, another cup, again another cup...
Drunk, I yearn for sleep, it's time to go
At dawn, if you want, come back with your lute." »

is a French composer of concrete music
an improviser (electronics, various analogic systems with modified speakers, REVOX reel-to-reel recorder…)
as well as a visual-sound artist, a writer and a poet

Whether his music is composed or improvised
the body has an important role (Lionel Marchetti danced with the university company Relyanse between 1986 and 1991)

To define his music, one can borrow Kenneth White’s saying :

« Concrete or abstract ?
I like abstraction where a memory of substance remains, concrete refined on the frontiers of emptiness. »
